The short version
We collect as little as we can. We never sell it, rent it or trade it. You can ask us to delete it any time. Some links on this site earn us a small commission, and that never costs you anything extra. Everything below is the longer version, in plain English.
10 Feet Traveling is our family’s site and our Guide to Tamarindo, Costa Rica. “We” and “us” means Matt and Erin Sampson. If you have a question about anything on this page, send us a note and one of us will answer it.
What we collect, and when
When you join The Crew
Our newsletter signup asks for your first name and email address. After that, you can choose to tell us your last name, your country, your state or province, your age range, and where you are with Costa Rica (first trip, coming back, thinking about moving, or here for the stories). All of that after the email is optional.
The Crew is one list that we share with Five Parks Life, our other family site, so the emails come from Five Parks Life. We send them with Mailchimp, which stores the list for us under its own privacy terms. We use it to send you new guides and stories, what we’re up to, and the occasional bit of news from our family’s other projects.
When you write to us
Our contact form asks for your name, your email address, what it’s about and your message. We save the message on this website and email a copy to ourselves so we can write back. To keep out spam, the message is checked by Akismet, a spam filter run by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com (their privacy policy). If you tick the box to join The Crew, you’re added to the list described above.
When you ask for an airport shuttle quote
The shuttle request form asks for your name, email, phone or WhatsApp number, how many people are coming, your flight details and dates, and where you’re staying. It goes to us and to the shuttle company that drives the rides, so they can quote your ride and book it with you.
When you ask about family photos
The photo request form asks for your name, email, an optional phone number, your dates and what kind of session you want. It goes to us and to Genna, the Tamarindo family photographer we recommend, so she can write back to you directly.
Just by visiting
Like nearly every website, we use Google Analytics to see which pages people read, roughly where they’re reading from (country or city, never a street address), what kind of device they use, and how they found us. Google sets cookies to do that (Google’s privacy policy). Our web host, WP Engine, keeps standard server logs, including IP addresses, to keep the site running and secure. We look at the totals to learn what’s useful. We don’t try to work out who any one visitor is.
What we never do
- We never sell, rent or trade your information.
- We never hand your email to anyone for their marketing.
- We don’t run ads on this site, and we don’t use advertising trackers.
- We don’t open comments, so nothing you post here is published under your name.
Affiliate links and our own places
Some links on this site pay us a small commission when you book through them. It never costs you anything extra. Prices are the same either way. Right now that means:
- Hotels.com links on our Where to Stay page. These are affiliate links through the Expedia Group program.
- Adobe Rent a Car. Our link gives you a reader discount of up to 20 percent on Adobe’s rate, and it’s a partner link for us.
We also want to be plain about the places that are ours. Casa Colorado is our own house in Tamarindo, which we rent out when we’re not there. Five Parks Yoga is Erin’s yoga business and retreats. Five Parks Life is our travel channel. When we mention them in the guide, it’s because they’re relevant, and now you know they’re ours.
Maps, videos and other sites
The maps on our dining and stay pages use OpenStreetMap. When a map loads, your browser fetches map pictures from OpenStreetMap’s servers and the map code from unpkg.com, so those services see your IP address the way any website would. The “Open in Google Maps” links take you to Google. Links to YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Hotels.com and other sites follow those sites’ own privacy rules once you click.
Cookies
This site sets very few cookies of its own. The ones you’ll see come from Google Analytics. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, or turn off Google Analytics everywhere with Google’s opt-out add-on. The site works fine either way.
Your choices
- Stop the emails. Every email from The Crew has a one-click unsubscribe link at the bottom.
- See it, fix it or delete it. Ask us through the contact form and we’ll send you what we have, correct it, or delete it, usually within a few days. Wherever you live, you get the same answer.
How long we keep things
We keep you on The Crew until you unsubscribe. We keep contact and request messages as long as we need them to help you and for our own records, and we delete them sooner if you ask. Analytics data is kept on Google’s standard schedule.
Kids
This is a family site, but it’s written for parents. We don’t knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you think your child sent us something, tell us and we’ll delete it.
Changes to this page
If the way we handle information changes, we’ll update this page and the date below.
