We have split our life between Colorado and Tamarindo since 2011. Our three kids went to TIDE Academy from 2012 until the youngest graduated in 2023. And right after “which school?”, a question we hear a lot is “okay, but what does it actually cost to live there?”
Here’s the honest answer. We did not keep a family budget we can publish, so here is what the numbers look like in 2026, with sources. Every figure below has a link and a date. Where the sources disagree (and they disagree a lot), we show the range and say so. Where we couldn’t find a trustworthy number, we tell you that too instead of guessing.
Exchange rate used on this page: ₡453 per US dollar, the Monex closing rate on October 9, 2026, as reported by La Nación. The colón has strengthened a lot in 2026 (El Mundo CR), so prices quoted in colones cost more dollars than they did a few years ago.
Sample Monthly Budget for a Family of Four (October 2026)
This is a sample, not our budget. All figures are US dollars per month, as of October 2026. It assumes:
- A 2 to 3 bedroom rental in Tamarindo or the towns right next to it.
- One car you already own.
- Residency, which means paying into the Caja (Costa Rica’s public health system).
| Category | Low | High | What the range is based on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rent, 2 to 3 bedrooms | $1,575 | $2,500 | Middle half of 25 monthly rental listings in the Tamarindo area on Encuentra24, October 13, 2026 (median $2,000). Most are furnished. |
| Electricity and water | $95 | $500 | Low end is Numbeo’s basic utilities for an 85 m² apartment. High end is Build Tropical’s estimate for a 2-bedroom running AC. Sources disagree widely. See the utilities section. |
| Internet | $50 | $80 | Build Tropical’s fiber range. Numbeo’s Tamarindo average is $59. |
| Two mobile phone plans | $40 | $154 | Numbeo’s range for one plan with 10GB+ of data ($20 to $77), times two. |
| Groceries | $1,350 | $1,460 | Wise ($337 per person, times four) and Livingcost ($1,459 food for a family of four). Both are modeled, not receipts. |
| Running one car | $300 | $500 | Build Tropical’s figure for fuel plus insurance and upkeep. Does not include buying the car. |
| Caja (public health) contribution | $90 | $250 | Build Tropical’s examples at 9 to 10 percent of declared income. The Caja sets your real amount at an interview. |
| Total | $3,500 | $5,444 | Before school tuition and private health insurance. Eating out is also extra. |
Not in that total:
- School tuition. See our schools guide.
- Private health insurance, which can run $300 to $700 per policy per month (details below).
- Eating out.
- One-time costs, such as residency paperwork or buying a car.
How this compares to the cost-of-living websites. They disagree with each other by a lot, which is part of why we built our own range:
| Source | Family of four, per month | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Livingcost | $3,990 with rent ($2,338 without) source |
Updated June 21, 2026 |
| Wise | $3,844 without rent source |
2026 (no exact date shown) |
| Nomads.com | $7,592, inclusions not stated source |

Rent in Tamarindo and the Towns Next Door
Housing is the line that swings your budget the most. On October 13, 2026 we pulled every monthly rental Encuentra24 lists under Tamarindo, across its furnished and unfurnished categories, and kept the 2 and 3 bedroom ones. That gave us 41 listings, which we split into two groups:
| Group | Places included |
|---|---|
| Tamarindo area | Tamarindo town Villarreal Huacas La Garita Santa Rosa |
| Wider beach towns, 15 to 30 minutes out | Avellanas Pinilla Playa Grande Matapalo |
Listings priced in colones were converted at ₡453.
| Area and size | Listings | Lowest | Median | Highest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tamarindo area, 2 bedrooms | 13 | $800 | $1,700 | $2,500 |
| Tamarindo area, 3 bedrooms | 12 | $1,650 | $2,200 | $3,500 |
| Wider beach towns, 2 bedrooms | 8 | $1,000 | $1,525 | $3,000 |
| Wider beach towns, 3 bedrooms | 8 | $1,400 | $2,050 | $3,500 |
Encuentra24 Tamarindo rentals, asking prices as of October 13, 2026.
A few real examples from that snapshot, so you can see what the money gets:
- $800 for a 2-bedroom apartment in Santa Rosa. source
- $1,650 for a pet-friendly 3-bedroom with a private pool in Villa Real. source
- $1,800 for a 2-bedroom condo in downtown Tamarindo. source
- $2,000 for a new, furnished 3-bedroom in La Garita near the schools, with water and internet included and a 6 to 12 month lease. source
- $2,200 for a 3-bedroom condo in a gated community in La Meridiana. source
- $3,500 for a 3-bedroom with a private pool in Tamarindo Park, walking distance to the beach. source
Where the sources disagree. Our listing snapshot runs higher than the older expat surveys:
| Source | What it says | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Expat Exchange | A nice 2-bedroom apartment runs $800 to $1,500. Larger homes and villas run $1,500 to $3,000, according to one expat quoted there. source |
April 11, 2025 |
| Build Tropical | $1,500 to $2,800 for a 2-bedroom in a gated community or condo. $2,500 to $4,500 for a 3-bedroom house with a pool. source |
June 23, 2026 |
| Numbeo | 3-bedroom apartment: ₡1,229,563 ($2,714) in the center, ₡624,636 ($1,379) outside it. Only 14 contributors in 18 months. source |
Updated October 2, 2026 |
Two things worth knowing before you go shopping. First, most listings we found were furnished, so if you’re shipping your own furniture you’re in a much smaller pool. Second, our snapshot had zero long-term listings in Playa Langosta, so we can’t give you a Langosta number. Ask a local property manager.
Utilities
Electricity (the big one)
Tamarindo gets its power from Coopeguanacaste, and its 2026 residential rates are set by the regulator, ARESEP. Here’s the published residential tariff for all of 2026, before tax:
| Monthly use | Price (2026) |
|---|---|
| First 30 kWh | ₡1,831.50 flat |
| 31 to 200 kWh | ₡61.05 per kWh |
| Above 200 kWh | ₡86.07 per kWh |
Coopeguanacaste 2026 tariff sheet (ARESEP resolution RE-0072-IE-2025, in force January 1 to December 31, 2026).
Under Costa Rica’s 2018 tax reform, homes using less than 280 kWh a month are exempt from the 13 percent sales tax (IVA) on electricity (CRHoy). Run AC and you’ll be over that line. Here’s what the tariff works out to at different usage levels. These are our own calculations from the table above, not quotes from the utility, and your bill can also carry small extra charges that we did not include:
| Monthly use | Before IVA | With 13% IVA | In dollars, with IVA |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250 kWh (ARESEP’s “typical home”) | ₡16,514 | Exempt | $36 |
| 400 kWh | ₡29,424 | ₡33,249 | $73 |
| 600 kWh | ₡46,638 | ₡52,701 | $116 |
| 900 kWh | ₡72,459 | ₡81,879 | $181 |
| 1,200 kWh | ₡98,280 | ₡111,056 | $245 |
A sanity check: ARESEP’s own numbers put a 250 kWh Coopeguanacaste home at about ₡18,595 in 2025 (ARESEP), minus a ₡1,779 cut for 2026 (ARESEP). That lands at about ₡16,816, close to our ₡16,514.
How many kWh will you use? That’s the part nobody can tell you, because it depends on the house and how many rooms you cool. The published estimates are all over the place. Numbeo puts basic utilities for an 85 m² apartment (water and garbage included) at ₡43,183, about $95 (Numbeo, October 2026). Build Tropical says a 2-bedroom running AC sees an electric bill of $250 to $500 a month (Build Tropical, June 2026). Our advice: ask the landlord for the last 12 months of power bills before you sign. (Our very first rental here, back in 2011, had AC in the master bedroom only and ceiling fans everywhere else. That was plenty for us, and it keeps the bill down.)
Water
We couldn’t find a published Tamarindo-specific water rate we trust. Some listings include water in the rent (the La Garita house above does), and Numbeo folds water into its $95 basic utilities figure. Ask what’s included.
Internet and phones
| Item | Price | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Home internet, 60 Mbps or faster | ₡26,714 ($59) a month, Numbeo average | Numbeo, October 2, 2026 |
| Fiber internet | $50 to $80 a month where available | Build Tropical, June 23, 2026 |
| Mobile plan with 10GB+ data | ₡13,738 ($30) a month, Numbeo average (range $20 to $77) | Numbeo, October 2, 2026 |
We tried to pull current prices straight from kölbi (the state carrier) and Liberty, but neither site showed plan prices when we checked in October 2026. Call or visit a store for the real number at your address.
Groceries and Eating Out
The two cost-of-living sites that model a family grocery bill land close together: about $1,350 a month (Wise’s $337 per person, times four) and $1,459 a month for food (Livingcost, family of four). Neither says exactly what’s in the basket, so treat these as a rough middle, not a promise.
Here are individual prices in Tamarindo from Numbeo, as of October 2, 2026. Numbeo only had 14 contributors for Tamarindo over 18 months, so these are estimates too.
| Item | Colones | Dollars |
|---|---|---|
| Milk, 1 liter | ₡1,080 | $2.38 |
| White bread, 1 lb loaf | ₡1,281 | $2.83 |
| White rice, 1 lb | ₡509 | $1.12 |
| Eggs, dozen | ₡1,595 | $3.52 |
| Chicken fillets, 1 lb | ₡2,152 | $4.75 |
| Local cheese, 1 lb | ₡2,208 | $4.87 |
| Apples, 1 lb | ₡1,058 | $2.34 |
| Bananas, 1 lb | ₡332 | $0.73 |
Where you shop matters. A 2026 grocery guide from Drink Tea Travel ranks the national chains like this (Drink Tea Travel, updated May 17, 2026). It gives no prices or percentages, only the tiers:
| Store | Price tier |
|---|---|
| Palí and Maxi Palí | Budget |
| Super Compro | Mid-range |
| Walmart | Mid-range |
| Auto Mercado | Premium, with the best imported selection |
The same guide points to the daily feria (farmers market) in Villa Real, right outside Tamarindo, for fruit and vegetables. For the stores inside Tamarindo itself, see our groceries and shopping guide and the Casa Colorado grocery store guide.
Eating out
| Meal | Price | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Meal at an inexpensive restaurant, one person | ₡5,557 ($12.27) | Numbeo, October 2, 2026 |
| Three-course dinner for two, mid-range | ₡28,000 ($61.81) | Numbeo, October 2, 2026 |
| Dinner for two, mid-range | $40 to $80 | Build Tropical, June 23, 2026 |
Tipping in Tamarindo works a lot like it does in the States. We wrote about that in our everyday tips, and our dining guide covers where we like to eat.
Getting Around
Gas
Fuel prices are set nationally by the regulator. ARESEP approved these prices for October 2026 (CRHoy, October 1, 2026):
| Fuel | Per liter | Per liter in dollars | Per US gallon in dollars |
|---|---|---|---|
| Super | ₡764 | $1.69 | $6.38 |
| Regular | ₡719 | $1.59 | $6.01 |
| Diesel | ₡785 | $1.73 | $6.56 |
Build Tropical puts the cost of running a car near Tamarindo, fuel and insurance included, at $300 to $500 a month (Build Tropical, June 2026). That’s the car line in our sample budget.
Buying a car
Cars cost more here than in the States, mostly because Costa Rica puts high tariffs and taxes on imported vehicles (Pura Autos). Numbeo’s Tamarindo contributors put a new Volkswagen Golf or equivalent at about $22,007 and a new Toyota Corolla sedan at about $34,950 (Numbeo, October 2026, in Numbeo’s own dollar conversion). We could not find a current used-car price we trust, so check live listings on Crautos or Encuentra24 before you budget.
Import taxes, if you’re thinking of shipping a car down. The tax is charged on the higher of what you paid (plus shipping and insurance) or the government’s own valuation, and it climbs with the age of the car. The sources don’t agree on the exact rates, and we could not find a current schedule from Hacienda:
| Age of car | Rate reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Under 3 years | 52.29% | CostaRicaLaw.com (article dated 2009) |
| 4 to 5 years | 63.91% (one importer says 73%) | CostaRicaLaw.com, Pura Autos |
| 6 years and older | 79.03% | CostaRicaLaw.com |

The marchamo
Every car pays the marchamo, the annual registration bundle, each December. It combines the property tax on the car’s official value with the mandatory SOA insurance, and a few smaller fees ride along too (El Observador, November 3, 2025). The amount depends entirely on the car. For 2026, the cheapest one in the country was ₡73,706 (about $163, for a 1989 Mitsubishi) and the most expensive was ₡7,192,439 (a 2018 Ferrari) (El Observador). We could not find a published average.
Renting instead
Kayak’s 12-month average for a pickup truck rental in Tamarindo is about $43 a day, or roughly $1,298 a month, though the same page also shows a $62 daily average elsewhere (Kayak, checked October 2026). Get a real 30-day quote. Our renting a car guide has the basics.
Health Care
The Caja (CCSS)
If you become a legal resident, you have to enroll in the Caja, Costa Rica’s public health system, and keep paying to keep your residency. A 2024 proposal to exempt some residency categories went nowhere, and the requirement stands (CostaRicaLaw.com, April 2024). Voluntary members pay a percentage of their declared income, and the Caja confirms your amount at an enrollment interview (ECIJA, July 9, 2026).
| Example | Monthly Caja payment reported |
|---|---|
| Pensionado declaring $1,000 a month | About $90 to $100 |
| Rentista family declaring $2,500 a month | About $225 to $250 |
Build Tropical, May 4, 2026, which uses a rate of 9 to 10 percent. Other guides we read gave lower and higher figures without sources we could check, so confirm with the Caja.
Private health insurance
If you want private coverage on top of the Caja, InternationalInsurance.com puts the average international policy for Costa Rica at $300 to $700 a month. Its sample quotes for one 30-year-old ran $217 to $1,105 a month on an IMG plan and $374 to $765 on a Cigna Global plan, depending on deductible and coverage area (InternationalInsurance.com, updated July 10, 2026). Those are per person. A family quote depends on everyone’s ages, so get one.
Doctor visits
We could not find a published 2026 price for a general visit at a private clinic in the Tamarindo area, so we’re not going to make one up. Call the clinic before you go. One expat quoted in Expat Exchange’s Tamarindo healthcare roundup says seeing a specialist means a drive to Liberia (Expat Exchange, June 14, 2025).
School Tuition
This is the biggest line most families leave out of their math. We put the 2026-27 tuition for every school near Tamarindo in one table in our schools guide. Read that page, then add your number to the budget above.
Residency and the Border Run
Staying as a tourist (the part-time route)
This is how we started out. Since September 2023, visitors from Costa Rica’s “Group 1” countries (the United States and Canada among them) can stay up to 180 days per entry instead of 90 (Envoy Global, September 12, 2023). Check the stamp in your passport, because that date is what counts. In 2012 the limit was 90 days, and we did a visa run to Nicaragua to reset the clock. With 180 days, a family splitting the school year the way we did may be able to fit a full semester inside one stay. Check the current rules with Migración before you count on it.
Residency paths
| Path | Main requirement | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Pensionado (retiree) | A lifetime pension of at least $1,000 a month | Migración (official site; it would not load for us in October 2026, so confirm the amount there) |
| Rentista (fixed income) | At least $2,500 a month of stable income, guaranteed for at least two years. Covers a spouse and children under 25. One residency firm says the old lump-sum deposit option is no longer accepted. | Migración, CRIE (verified September 7, 2026) |
| Inversionista (investor) | An investment of at least $150,000 | Migración (official site; it would not load for us in October 2026, so confirm the amount there) |
| Digital nomad stay (not residency) | $3,000 a month for one person, $4,000 with family. One year, renewable once. Health insurance of at least $50,000. Build Tropical says $5,000 for families, so sources disagree. | Taxes for Expats (June 12, 2026), Build Tropical (May 4, 2026) |
What residency costs to set up
| Item | Cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Application fee (pensionado or rentista) | $50 per applicant | CRIE, checked September 18, 2026 |
| Change of immigration status | $200 | CRIE |
| Guarantee deposit | Varies by nationality, stated in your approval | CRIE |
| Digital nomad fees | $100 government deposit plus a $90 document fee | Taxes for Expats, June 12, 2026 |
| Immigration attorney, full rentista process | $2,500 to $5,000 typical | Build Tropical, May 4, 2026 |
Paperwork like apostilles and translations is extra. Always confirm fees with the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería at migracion.go.cr before you pay anything.
What Surprised Us
We never published a budget, but we did write about money and logistics as we went. A few things from our own posts still hold up:
- Imported brands cost more. Import taxes get baked into the price of anything that comes from outside Costa Rica, so the brands you know from home cost extra. Buying local saves real money. (Groceries and Shopping in Tamarindo)
- The grocery stores were tiny when we arrived. In December 2011 the stores in town were about five aisles each, and we learned on day one that they won’t take a credit card without ID. Tamarindo has a full Auto Mercado now. (Life in Tamarindo: The Super 2001)
- One air conditioner was enough. Our first place had AC in our bedroom and fans everywhere else, and we slept fine. Worth remembering when you look at that electricity table. (Life in Tamarindo: Our Casa)
- Holidays strain the town. Over Christmas 2011 the crowds were so big that the power and internet went out a lot, and Semana Santa in 2015 was spotty too. Plan around it if you work online. (Happy New Year, A Quick Update)
- The real stress was cash before we ever left. In 2010 we went into full saving mode, questioning every purchase and cutting monthly bills to build a cushion for the move. (First Stress: Cash)
FAQ
How much does it cost a family of four to live in Tamarindo?
Our sample budget for a family of four lands at about $3,500 to $5,444 a month as of October 2026. That covers the everyday basics for a 2 to 3 bedroom rental with one car and Caja health coverage. It does not include school tuition or private health insurance, and eating out is extra.
How much is rent in Tamarindo for a family?
In an October 13, 2026 snapshot of Encuentra24 listings, 2-bedroom rentals in the Tamarindo area had a median of $1,700 a month and 3-bedroom rentals a median of $2,200. The middle half of all 2 and 3 bedroom listings ran $1,575 to $2,500. Most were furnished.
How much is the electric bill in Tamarindo with air conditioning?
It depends on how much you run the AC. Using Coopeguanacaste’s 2026 residential tariff plus the 13 percent IVA, 600 kWh a month works out to about $116 and 1,200 kWh to about $245. Published estimates range from about $95 for all basic utilities in a small apartment to $250 to $500 for a 2-bedroom running AC. Ask the landlord for a year of bills.
How much does gas cost in Costa Rica right now?
For October 2026, ARESEP approved ₡764 a liter for super gasoline. Regular is ₡719 and diesel is ₡785. At ₡453 per dollar, super is about $1.69 a liter, or about $6.38 a US gallon.
Can you live in Tamarindo part of the year without residency?
Yes, as a tourist, within limits. Since September 2023, visitors from Group 1 countries such as the United States and Canada can stay up to 180 days per entry, up from 90. Check the current rules with Costa Rica’s immigration department before you plan around it.
Do foreign residents have to pay into the Caja?
Yes. Legal residents have to enroll in the Caja, Costa Rica’s public health system, and keep paying to maintain residency. The payment is a percentage of declared income set at an enrollment interview. One 2026 guide reports about $90 to $100 a month for a pensionado declaring $1,000 and about $225 to $250 for a rentista family declaring $2,500.
Last checked October 2026. Prices in Costa Rica move with the exchange rate and with ARESEP’s monthly fuel and annual power decisions, so we’ll refresh this page. If you live here and something looks off, tell us. We’d rather fix it than be wrong.
